My Essential Alaska Travel Resources :
There are a lot of travel companies out there, but some are better than others. These are my favorite websites and resources to help plan an incredible trip to the 49th State. For flights, I recommend using WayAway or Hopper to compare the cheapest dates to travel to Alaska. Car rentals, arguably the best way to see Alaska, are best through Discover Cars! I always use AGODA for hotels. They have an easy-to-use platform where you can compare the best rates. To keep cell phone service if you're traveling internationally, I always use Airalo’s easy to purchase eSIM’s (no installation required). For fun things to do, I recommend Viator to find the best tours in the area, otherwise Klook also does the trick. Just in case, Safetywing is the insurance I always use for travel insurance. Lastly, my Alaska packing list for your travels to the Last Frontier. Visiting Homer Alaska
In addition to having plenty of incredible places to eat, there's also lots to do in Homer - even if you're visiting during the winter months. If you're planning to visit, even if just for a short weekend, you'll need a place to stay. I highly recommend checking the availability at Westwind Cabins. They have 4 unique cabins onsite creating the perfect spaces for couples or families - and the best part? Their all inclusive spa with a hot tub, sauna, and cold plunge that you can use during your stay! Perfect for those cold winter months. ;) And even though they feel secluded and "out in the Alaskan wilderness," they're really only a 5 minute ride from downtown!
My Favorite Tours Near Homer :
- Katmai National Park Bear Viewing 9 Best Restaurants in Homer
1. The Twisted Goat, $$
This new-ish restaurant (opened May 2022) is a popular spot and one of the few places in Homer open year round. I was able to stop here on my most recent visit to Homer and even though it was in the off season it was hands down one of the busiest places around. Chances are there will be a bit of a wait if you want to visit for dinner. My husband and I ordered the Fun Guy Pizza and the Salmon Burger, both of which were very tasty and had excellent flavors. We also tried the Rhubarb Panna Cotta dessert and it was a delicious, lighter dessert option!
2. The Kannery, $$
Another popular restaurant that's open year round is The Kannery. You can often find live music here, and because they're only open for dinner the wait can be extremely long if you don't have a reservation. Although in the winter months dinner time is often dark, in the summers they also have a great view of Kachemak Bay and the mountain range. We ordered the Fish & Chips and Creole Shrimp Pasta as our entrees (delicious) and the Fried Pickles for our appetizer (ok, not very "pickle-y"). For dessert we tried their cheesecake, with weekly special flavors (also ok, we tried the caramel which came out almost like a toffee candy - creating an interesting texture).
3. Fat Olives, $
As the most recommended pizza place in town - this is my husband's "must stop" anytime we visit Homer. If you're hungry and craving a greasy New York style slice of pizza, then this is the place. Although they have a sit in restaurant section, we typically choose to take a slice to go - but be warned, their slices of pizza are truly gigantic!
4. Harbor Grill, $$
This seasonal restaurant on the Spit is a new favorite of mine. Even though they're only open in the summer, they're definitely worth a stop if you're able to get in. We tried the Coconut Crusted Halibut Cheeks (incredible) and the Cod Fish & Chips - although honestly I don't think you could go wrong with any of their dishes. They also have great views of the harbor and Kachemak Bay!
5. BB's Bakery, $
This hidden gem is a great spot to go if you're looking for a quick breakfast snack to go - or if you have a sweet tooth. My husband is obsessed with their donuts, and to be fair they have some excellent fresh baked items too. If you're craving something warmer, they also have soups and hot dishes like biscuits & gravy. If you want some coffee to go with it, they serve it here but you can also check out Brew Alaska on the Spit to enjoy your drink with some incredible views!
6. La Baleine Cafe, $$
This summer cafe is also located on the Spit of Homer, and is another spot that can fill up quickly. If you go, I encourage you to try their "Musher Meal" - the exact dish they served to Iditarod mushers for 30 years! You'll even get to try a unique local dish - reindeer sausage. They also host fun events like Trivia Nights and Beach Clean Up days!
7. Johnny's Corner, $$
A new favorite of mine, unfortunately only open in the summer, is Johnny's Corner - a small pop up type shop that's only open in the Summer. With just a few outdoor seating options, their dishes are a bit spendy but deliciously healthy. Located at the Salmon Sisters flagship store near Land's End, their dishes incorporate fresh local seafood with global ingredients - like kimchi & wasabi aioli.
8. The Bagel Shop, $$
This local bakery has delicious handmade bagels & sandwiches, and even though it's typically very busy - it's definitely worth a stop! I highly recommend their BLT sandwich on an everything bagel or trying one of their "Bagel Dogs" with reindeer sausage inside! You can take your choices to go or dine in.
9. Captain's Coffee, $$
This local breakfast joint is a bit of a hidden gem, and although their food resembles greasy diner food - my husband and I were honestly pleasantly surprised. We ordered the Chicken & Waffles and the Biscuits and Gravy, and even though it wasn't the best food we've ever had it was pretty tasty. It also helped that it was one of the only breakfast places open year round (and on a Sunday!).
