Van Life - the phenomenon that swept the nation after Covid. Now, there's a way for you to test it out on your next trip to Alaska. Enter, Vanderlust Vans - a campervan rental company located in the heart of Anchorage. With most people flying in and out of Alaska through this city, it makes for the perfect place to begin an epic roadtrip and van life adventure through the state. Or if you're locals like us, you might even want to try a quick weekend getaway.

My Essential Alaska Travel Resources :
There are plenty of travel companies out there, but these are my favorite websites and resources for planning an unforgettable trip to Alaska. This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

For flights, I recommend using Hopper to compare the cheapest dates to travel to Alaska.

Car rentals, arguably the best way to see Alaska, are best through Discover Cars!

I always use Expedia's easy-to-use platform to compare the best rates.

To keep cell service if you're traveling internationally, I use Airalo’s easy to purchase eSIM’s (no installation required), and NordVPN to stay safe while connecting to different wifi.

For fun things to do, I recommend Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours in the area.

Just in case, Safetywing is the insurance I always use for travel insurance.

Lastly, my Alaska packing list for your travels to the Last Frontier.

Vanderlust Vans is my newest, favorite find here in Anchorage. Open year round, you can choose if you'd like to rent a van for just one weekend or upwards of weeks at a time, maybe even a month or two. They have 13 different converted vans available so you can browse around to see which is the best fit for you - and depending on whether you're from out of town or not you can either pick up at their office or right at the Anchorage Airport!

Certain vans fit certain needs better, like their Poseidon Ford Transit Van if you have lots of gear you want to bring with, or their Manta Ray Mercedes Sprinter Van if you're a solo/couple traveler wanting a nice space to enjoy. Either way, my husband and I always say a road trip is truly the best way to explore Alaska and includes some areas that a bit more off the beaten path - especially since Alaska has plenty of free pull-off spots along the highways.

Van Life in Alaska - My Experience

To be completely honest, my husband and I were truly blown away at how seamless the entire process was. We picked up our van at their office location, and everything was all ready for us - gas was full, heater gas was full, propane was full, windshield wiper fluid was topped off - and they even had prepared the van with Valentine's Day decorations and supplied us with chocolates and a bottle of wine! They easily became some of the best hosts we've had with a rental here in Alaska.

On top of it, they even gave us a 24/7 number to text with any issues (not that we had any) and the van itself was clean and easy to handle. My husband and I ended up traveling from Anchorage down to Hope for one night, and then over to the Portage area for the next night. Being able to just pull over and camp wherever we wanted without having to set anything up was wonderful, and we can't wait for our next van life adventure here in Alaska!
