My Essential Alaska Travel Resources :
There are plenty of travel companies out there, but these are my favorite websites and resources for planning an unforgettable trip to Alaska. This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. For flights, I recommend using Hopper to compare the cheapest dates to travel to Alaska. Car rentals, arguably the best way to see Alaska, are best through Discover Cars! I always use Expedia's easy-to-use platform to compare the best rates. To keep cell service if you're traveling internationally, I use Airalo’s easy to purchase eSIM’s (no installation required), and NordVPN to stay safe while connecting to different wifi. For fun things to do, I recommend Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours in the area. Just in case, Safetywing is the insurance I always use for travel insurance. Lastly, my Alaska packing list for your travels to the Last Frontier. Beaches in Alaska - What to Expect
Most people don't realize Alaska has beaches, and quite a few of them. But they might be a little different than the beaches you're used to. With over 6,600 miles of shoreline from the mainland, Alaska's beaches are a bit more rugged and darker colored - think of Iceland's famous black beaches.
Throughout Alaska, most beaches you find will have a dark sand - typically a gray or black - and many beaches will be a bit rocky. These rocky beaches are typically excellent spots for tidepooling - especially with the ever changing tides. It's a good idea to check tide schedules here. The most important thing to remember is to stay off of the mud flats - which can quickly become dangerous. There are countless stories of visitors heading out onto the mud during low tide for a different view or just to explore, and then becoming stuck - with deadly consequences as the tide rolls in.
My Favorite Tours Near Seldovia :
- Kachemak Bay Wildlife Tour - Grewingk Glacier Guided Hike - Bear Viewing from Homer Why Between Beaches is the Perfect Cozy Stay
Between Beaches is the ultimate beachfront stay in Alaska - mainly because it's literally "between the beaches." My husband and I visited for the first time earlier this month and we were honestly blown away - in all our travels we've never stayed in a cabin that is quite literally on the beach.
Although they typically offer guests a ride out from Homer on their own boat, because we visited in the shoulder season we took Mako's Water Taxi to make our way across Kachemak Bay. You can expect beautiful views of the mountain range and bay, and the opportunity to see plenty of otters and if you're lucky even whales.
While you're there you can relax and enjoy - whether that's from their adorably cozy cabins, in the hammock, or in their hot tub & sauna (both which have amazing views). There's plenty to do if you're wanting to be a bit more active though - like kayaking, fishing, tide pooling, and hiking right from the cabin. You can even take a taxi into the nearby town of Seldovia to do a bit more exploring.
There's a few things you'll want to bring with you on your visit - like the food you need for your stay, a swimsuit, waterproof shoes, and warm layers since the wind off the bay can be chilly sometimes (even in the summer). Oh - and of course a camera, during our stay we had otters popping up in the distance, eagles, and beautiful tide pools.
