My Essential Alaska Travel Resources :
There are plenty of travel companies out there, but these are my favorite websites and resources for planning an unforgettable trip to Alaska. This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. For flights, I recommend using Hopper to compare the cheapest dates to travel to Alaska. Car rentals, arguably the best way to see Alaska, are best through Discover Cars! I always use Expedia's easy-to-use platform to compare the best rates. To keep cell service if you're traveling internationally, I use Airalo’s easy to purchase eSIM’s (no installation required), and NordVPN to stay safe while connecting to different wifi. For fun things to do, I recommend Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours in the area. Just in case, Safetywing is the insurance I always use for travel insurance. Lastly, my Alaska packing list for your travels to the Last Frontier. Finding the Tramway & Getting Tickets
Luckily the Mount Roberts Tramway office is easy to find with their large building right in downtown Juneau along the waterfront boardwalk - just look for the building with the cable cars coming out of it. You can also just type in "Mount Roberts Tramway" on any maps and it'll bring you to the right spot. Personally, I think it's one of the best things to do in Juneau!
Getting tickets is just as easy, and you have two options of reserving your ride on the tram. The first option is to wait and get them once you arrive at the office, however if you're visiting in the summer and there are a couple of cruises ported in Juneau then it could be really busy. Your second option is to get them online ahead of time, which is what I always recommend when traveling in the busy season. To get tickets online, just head to their site and click the bright red "tickets" button. Currently, prices are $45 for children aged 3-12 or $60 for adults. Unfortunately they do not sell single ride tickets, so these admission prices are for a full day pass - but that means you can ride it as many times as you want! Which is great if it gets cloudy on either your ride up or down.
My Favorite Tours in Juneau :
- Whale Watching Tour - Mendenhall Glacier Express Tour - Helicopter & Icefield Adventure What to Expect on the Tram
The ride up and down the trams are pretty self explanatory - but if you're able to I would try to stand in a spot closest to the waterfront and in one of the corners, this way you have the best unobstructed views as you ride the tram up or down! The ride is 6 minutes each way, which sounds short, but is plenty of time to take some pictures and take in the scenic views. If you look down you might even spot a black bear in the forest!
Once you get to the top, there's plenty to do! You can browse the Local Artists Gallery and Gift Shop, both which support local artists and crafters. You can enjoy the 18 minute film in the Chilkat Theatre which shares the traditions and history of the local Tlingit people. You can even head out on a short hike to explore more of the area or just sit back and enjoy a locally brewed beer at the "Tr'Ale House". If you're feeling a bit hungrier, then you can grab a bite at the Timberline Bar and Grill, which serves everything from local bites (think Alaskan salmon, shrimp, halibut or cod) to more everyday meals (like burgers and salads). Typically, I recommend setting aside at least one hour to enjoy the amenities at the top before taking the tram ride back down. If you're looking for a more guided experience at the top, Mount Roberts Tram (also called the Goldbelt Tram) offers 4 different tours that you can find here.
