6 Best Places to Stay in Haines, Alaska (My Honest Opinion)

11/17/2025

Haines is one of the cutest, small cities in Southeast Alaska. A popular stop for cruise goers and those driving the Alaska Highway, it's home to Alaska's famous Bald Eagle Festival and has unique attractions like the local Hammer Museum. In the winter months you'll find that many local businesses close down, including some places to stay, but there's still plenty of options no matter which season you're visiting in.

My Essential Alaska Travel Resources :
There are plenty of travel companies out there, but these are my favorite websites and resources for planning an unforgettable trip to Alaska. This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

For flights, I recommend using Hopper to compare the cheapest dates to travel to Alaska.

Car rentals, arguably the best way to see Alaska, are best through Discover Cars!

I always use Expedia's easy-to-use platform to compare the best rates.

To keep cell service if you're traveling internationally, I use Airalo’s easy to purchase eSIM’s (no installation required), and NordVPN to stay safe while connecting to different wifi.

For fun things to do, I recommend Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours in the area.

Just in case, Safetywing is the insurance I always use for travel insurance.

Lastly, my Alaska packing list for your travels to the Last Frontier.

How to Get to Haines & Getting Around

Picture

Getting to Haines is pretty straightforward, and there's 4 main ways you can get there. If you're looking for a fun roadtrip with incredible views, then driving from Anchorage is the best option for you. This option will take about 14 hours without stops. The second option is take a ferry from Juneau, which takes about 5 hours each way.

The third and most expensive option to get directly to Haines is to fly, it's also the fastest option. For this you'll need to fly to Anchorage or Juneau first, then take a small flight to Haines. Lastly, we have taking a cruise! Haines is a popular cruise port in the summer, however if you're visiting via cruise chances are you won't be needing a place to stay during your visit in Haines.

No matter where you decide to stay, I encourage you to choose either of the hotels or a private rental that has caretakers in town. During our stay there were a few power outages around town, and chances are you'll have more options if you stay somewhere that has someone who can take care of the issue for you while you're in town.

Best Places to Stay in Haines

1. Captain's Choice Motel
This local motel is actually my top option of places to stay in Haines. It has included continental breakfast, has amazing views overlooking the harbor and the Chilkoot Inlet (ask for a room on the second floor if possible) and you can even rent cars from here. The best part is it's just one block from Main Street.

2. Chilkat Bakery Cottage
Although the actual Bakery was closed when we visited, a few of the other Bald Eagle Festival guests were staying here at the attached cottage. The outside might not be the best, but the inside is simple and cozy.

3. Aspen Suites Hotel
If you're looking for a modern hotel stay with amenities, then the Aspen Suites Hotel is the one for you. They're within walking distance to downtown, and each room includes a kitchenette. They also have free Wifi, a gym, and a laundry room.

4. Hotel Halsingland
This historic hotel is located on the former Fort Seward, a historic military fort built in 1904. Some of the buildings in the Fort even date all the way back to 1902. Rooms vary, but the staff consistently gets excellent reviews, and if you're looking for a historic but cozy stay, this is the one for you.

5. Fort Seward B & B
This adorable Bed & Breakfast on Fort Seward is an old fashioned B&B, with cozy rooms, and incredible views of the harbor and town.

6. Fort Seward Condos
These condos are simple, and although they're a bit outdated, they've also got some incredible views of the inlet, harbor and downtown.

7. Chilkat Tower
These luxury condo rentals offer both short term and long term stays, have beautiful mountain views, and are located right downtown meaning you can easily walk to any restaurants or shops. They're modern and cozy.

8. Mountain & Glacier View Home
This home is located on the outskirts of town, so even though you could probably walk to downtown if you wanted, it'd be much easier if you have a car. They allow pets, and if you're looking for a more secluded stay surrounded by nature - then this is it. Plus they have some unbeatable views!
